You started writing about IE8, I just realized that you also wrote about Firefox.
Does this also mean, that you are able to reproduce the problem with IE8 and Firefox ?

To start, at least version of MantisBT and PHP

Do you think the displayed error message can be true?
Are there many users on your system?
Or do you think the message is wrong, because you have just few users working with your installation?

Did you set $g_enable_product_build = ON; in config_inc.php ?

The table mantis_plugin_table should exist after upgrading by running admin/install.php
I think there is some confusing documentation around this

Mantis was working fine with the larger database also... but 2 two 3 week before the issue happens. Seems that a) the problem is not related to MantisBT b) quite sure you will have the problem after upgrading I think it's better to invest time to find out what was happening on your server 2-3 weeks...

config_inc.php overrides the config_defaults_inc.php so its ok if you insert it to there only! This is not just OK, this is the preferred solution for this.
