Depends on the setup you choose. You could setup underneath each project 2 or more sub-projects, one for the default group and one for each other group. This however would bring additional maintenance which you prabably do not like.
Alternative would be to use a plugin for that

if access is done based on IP, you need to adjust config_inc.php, if based upon domain name, no impact at all.

You need to upgrade the old installation, then all data will remain available.

Can you clarify what the expectation exactly is, which time?

Would suggest to upgrade one instance and use export/import from the other instance into the upgraded version. It can hold 4gb, no clue how many charcters since that depends on characterset. Nevertheless it cannot be further extended

Suggest to try it on a test system.
You can try to go straight to version 2.
If that fails, would try a 3 step approach
first to 1.10
next to 1.20
finally to 2.x

You need an account with sufficient rights on the LDAP server.
