email notifications not getting through

Hi,
I have just installed MantisBT 2.9.0-0074 on my Synology NAS server DS213+. I have created two users but, cannot login as passwords are unknown , none of the email notifications are getting through. Do I have to enter an email server address anywhere in order to send notifications to users?
Why can't the administrator manually reset the password for a user and then force the user to change it on login?
