Advice on "date due" customisation or hack

Hello,
I plan to try using Mantis for assigning tasks to my team on various projects. I've always used PHPCollab as it allows a due date to be entered, but Mantis is such a better system.
I have seen a Mantis Hack for adding this feature, or I can add a custom field. Can anyone advise on which route to take, and maybe advise on which Hack to use?
Effectively I will be using Mantis as a Project Management system. If anyone can suggest ways of adding any of the following it would be appreciated:
* To Do list
* Notes
* Custom fields on the actual project (like status)
