Authentication - SSO

Hello,
I know there has been discussion about authentication and moving to a plugin authentication system. In searching it looks like all the threads are several years old now and I wanted to check to see if there was any new status on it. In particular, I would like to implement SAML in Mantis so I can move it to the cloud with the other applications and have a SSO for all applications.
Has anyone successfully done this? I have looked at SimpleSAMLphp but do not have a developer that has enough free time to implement this.
