Color customization : any ideas?

Hi to all,
Before templates get available (hopeful smile), it seems that it would be pretty easy to customize colors by hand (backgrounds and especially state colors).
Yet I'm not much of a graphic designer :)
Has anyone already changed the color set to something interesting? How would you go and design a new palette ?
