Custom Text Areas and custom field limitations

Hello everybody!
Since the search function didn't come up with something, I wanted to ask myself:
1.) is it possible to include a custom field as a text area instead of a simple text field?
2.) is it possible to raise the limit of characters one can enter into a text field (digits and/or letters)?
