MySQL user vs Mantis user

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have some difficulty understanding the authentication process used by a Mantis user during login.
The my.ini file of MySQL gives me the username and password for what? The database server or the actual database?
If I created the 'bugtracker' database using the Manits installation process what is the Manits username and password; what is the MySQL username and password?
I can see the Mantis tables when I use the MySQL tools in the command promt window. Using 'root' and no password. But I am not able to login using the Mantis login screen. Do I need to edit the configuration file of Mantis manually? But how is the access to MySQL authenticated then?
Thanks for any help.
Kind regards
