If the user merely views the bug then there is a single option for them to change the status.

Its not set to update status, its set to viewer. Our anonymous users are unable to report bugs, just view them.

any other ideas?

Currently in our setup the anonymous account can change the status of the bugs. Uh, how do we go about turning this option off?

I noticed that functionality has been added for 1.1 that allows users to file bugs by e-mail, but has anyone put any thought into adding the ability to add notes by responding to bug notifications from Mantis?

I've implemented some of the recommendations in this thread, specifically allowing reporters to handle issues which at least now allows me to assign the issue back to the original reporter.

Currently I have my developers first assigning the bug back to the reporter and then going back to the bug ...
