Problem with users registering themselves

I've been using 0.19.1 on W2000 for about a year for a course I teach. The class is just starting to use Mantis and I asked them all to go and register themselves (create their userids). This worked last fall and last spring but now when they try to register they get an EMail message from Mantis and PHP that the phpmail object can't be instantiated (or somthing like that). I haven't done anything to the Mantis or php software but I have installed some W2000 security patches. Does anyone have any ideas where I go from here???
