Mantis + PHPmailer + Linux

Hi,

i use:
Debian Etch
Apache
PHP5
Mantis 1.1.8
PHPmailer

PHPmailer doesn't show any error but i cannot send emails through mantis. Do i need sendmail installed while building php in order to activate the mail module in php which configurations settings are read by Mantis? Perhaps these settings are not used because the mail module is not active?!
