Absolute vs. Relative URLs

that last summer a change was made to make issue links and issue notes links absolute URLs. I work offsite as a contractor for the Government, and as so, I need to tunnel via ssh to the web server hosting Mantis. This, of course, makes the absolute urls not work.

I am curious as to the impetus behind the change and whether or not these links and any other that are absolute could be made relative so they work while tunneled.
