Multi-byte characters for tags

Hi,

I have just tested the new tagging feature.
I liked the functionality itself very much, but was surprised that it doesn't allow me to enter Japanese characters as a tag.
I believe this limitation makes this great feature less attractive to Japanese users (or to any other multi-byte language users).
Is there any technical or security reason for doing this?
