Impact of removing severities

This is probably a simple one and I apologise for my lack of knowledge. I think I have worked out how to remove/add severities from reading other topics. What I don't know is, what the impact would be on existing reported bugs if I remove a severity that is used in them.

i.e. if a bug is classified as a block and I then remove this severity from the appropriate php scripts, what happens to that bug?

Any ideas?
