Any function involving email very slow

Notably account creation. After clicking submit, the page hangs for over a minute before redirecting the user. When adding notes or closing bugs that would send an email notification, the same behavior appears. I've attempted to change email notification to using SMTP, but I get errors about the return address.

Running 1.0.1 on RHES3. Any ideas?
