Requried enumeration field

Where I have an option under managing custom fields to have the type set to enumeration and I also select 'require on report'. However, in doing so there is always a default option preselected so the user doesn't actually have to select anything. How can I force the user to actually select an option. I have tried (select)|option A|option B and |option A|option B but both do not require them to select option A or B, it just accepts the blank or (select) as a valid option. How can I fix this?
