InstantMantis 1.1.1: email: no error, but not sent

Found references to "config_defaults_inc.php" $g_phpMailer_method in this forum, but I think I need more.

Trying to set up a user or two, just as a demo, and it appears to need email as the confirmation. If I set
$g_enable_email_notification = OFF;
will users be able to log in with a default password - and if so where do I find it?

Problem is that I don't get an error in the command window, or in the browser window where I'm logged in as administrator, but I also don't get an email at the target address. Finally noticed all of the
# Mantis Email Settings
(suggestion: add something about changing these to the installation instructions - or are they available from the interface?)
