Summary0006733: AJAX Search not working in Firefox 1.5
Description

I am using Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Windows XP Pro runnin SP2. When I click a heading in the Search (eg "Reporter") It brings up the "Loading..." and then sits there - it does not load the actual dropdown. It works fine in IE however.

Any clues?

Make sure you are not clicking on the link before the page fully loads. This is because the Javascript is only activated after the page is fully loaded.

Yup, the page is definitely fully loaded before clicking the link. I just tried it on this very install - works fine in IE, but in Firefox 1.5 just sits there saying "Loading...". I use FireBug in Firefox and it seems that the AJAX request is being placed and the <select> is being returned in the response - it just does not update the page itself.

Here is the Response according to FireBug (when clicking on "Product Build"):

<!-- show_build_filter --><!-- Build -->

Please see also 0006754. From info in that bug report, it seems possible there is a problem with an unrecognized character in the XmlHttpRequest's response. The only possibly weird part I saw in your captured output was this:

<option value="??" selected="selected" >??</option>

Is that actually what you want there? Two question marks? Or are those some other special characters that aren't being represented properly in the character encoding? If so, what are the characters, and what character encoding (what language) are you using?

The problem might be FireBug. Do you have 'Show XMLHttpRequests' turned on under 'Options'? If so, maybe you should turn it off.

Disabling Firebug "Show XMLHttpRequests" fixed the problem. Thank you so much - I should have thought of that!!
